RSC Industry Intelligence: Daniel Newman of QuakerNinja

The apparel industry is one of many moving parts. For every high-profile designer there are thousands of photographers, marketing professionals and independent designers who quietly do their part to keep our community vibrant and relevant.  These individuals deserve their recognition. In an effort to ensure that, RSC’s Industry Intelligence make sure you hear from these unsung heroes who keep it real each and every day.

Name, rank and why we should care?
Quaker Joel Ninja but you can call me Newman. Being your own boss means being your only employee, so as far as rank goes, I handle all of it as best I can. It’s a bit of a misnomer that freelancers like myself go it alone.

Why should you care? When you choose to support an independent brand all of that support is going directly where you want it to. I can’t do it without friends like you guys and my fans.

I am old enough to remember a world before the internet. It’s opened up a lot opportunity for all of us and I would encourage anyone with the passion for it to go for it [and start your own business.] The game has changed and you don’t need an institution to be successful anymore. Everyone who wants it bad enough can be a winner.

What are you working on right now?
I am currently going back to my fine art roots and working on some large-scale drawings. I am on eight of a series of ten civil war portraits with a twist. Each is 32X40 inches on matte boards.

This is my first time working at this scale and so far it’s going well. Having dual experience in both traditional and digital art has really improved my confidence and work flow.

I have a neat little gadget called the cinemin swivel that has recently become my new favorite tool. It’s a pico projector – I just do my sketches small-scale, scan them in, add them to my iPod, shine them on my studio wall and go to town.  I hope to find a gallery for the series soon. I will be entering two of them into a local community art show in July.

I’ve never had a show before and to be honest I am finding the whole prospect a little terrifying. Wish me luck.

What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
I have plans to resurrect my personal brand and print some new items as funding becomes available. I also continue to work with the folks at Art House co-op making sketchbooks for the Brooklyn Art Library. The 2012 tour will be coming to my neighborhood next year so I’m looking forward to that opportunity.

I can’t think of anything I would rather do with my time then draw stuff all day. Each day has the potential to be a new win, but sometimes it’s hard to get off the bench.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
Its’ a long list. The negative influence is my own fear. I tend to over think things a lot and worry about potential problems as much as actual problems. It’s a real productivity killer and I need to struggle to overcome that and maintain confidence in my own abilities. I think it’s pretty common with artists.

The most positive influence has been access to other working artists – I love the community support, making new friends and sharing our successes and failures.

What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
The hardest lesson I am still learning is that I am special, but not that special.

I have to really make sure to remind myself that not all of my success is the result of my own efforts. I owe a large debt of gratitude to my fans and art friends who keep me from growing a Hindenburg sized ego.As history reminds us, that didn’t end well.

The cure to failure is success. The enemy of success is self-doubt and silly melancholy shenanigans. We all get those feelings – it’s ok. Just don’t let it stop you from being awesome even when you don’t feel like it. Shake it off like a drying dog and get some work done.

Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?

I am currently reading the “Pricing and Ethical Guidelines.” It’s very thrilling and I have a suspicion the butler did it.

For movies, I really like cartoons. It’s nice to see some of the smaller studios get some attention. “Hoodwinked 2” from Kanbar Entertainment and of course, “Coraline” from Portland’s own LAIKA House.

I will probably get rocks thrown at me for admitting I like Aqua, but I do.

Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”

I wouldn’t be where I am today without each and every last one of you. Thank you.

I’d like to give a shout-out to my good friend, Lori Kirk from Cavata Clothing. Also, check out my Facebook fan page!

RSC Industry Intelligence: Josh Schmitz of Ruckus Apparel

Name, rank and why we should care?
Josh Schmitz – Owner / Founder / and MFCEO of RUCKUS.

What are you working on right now?
We released our fall collection on September 2nd and that’s been keeping us really busy. We’re currently working on a ton of team orders getting ready for the winter sports season. Custom team gear is one of my most favorite things we do.

What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
We’re collaborating right now with the Denver Outlaws (Colorado’s professional lacrosse team). We’re also planning and pulling fabrics and cuts for our winter collection. We’re  doing some really cool cut and sew stuff including scarves, cardigans and a freaking sweet old school wool button-up sweater. I’m really stoked on how it’s all turning out.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
What influences our brand most is probably an odd combination of Naughty By Nature, Jonah Lomu, early-90s Miami Hurricane football, Abercrombie & Fitch and bare-knuckle boxing.

What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
This is really tough and I could give you some topical business bullshit like “do your taxes,” but I pride myself on being an honest and authentic guy so let’s get deep.

I went through a divorce last year and the toughest lesson I had to learn was that you can’t always be perfect. That sometimes, even when you try your best and all your intentions are right, sometimes things just don’t go according to plan. I’ve come to the conclusion that joy doesn’t ever really lead to or change shit. It’s the character arc in the story that is the real climax – the conflict. The conflict is what changes you and you can either get bitter or you can get better. And that’s a hard lesson to learn bro…a really hard one.

Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?
Book: A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. I HIGHLY recommend both this book along with Blue Like Jazz to young and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Movie: Bridesmaids. If you haven’t seen it yet, DOOOOO IT! It’s like the Hangover but for chicks, hahaha. And of course, 300, Lost Boys, and Running Scared are always on repeat at my place, too.

Record: That’s a tough one. White Pony by the Deftones has always been one of my favorites as well as In Shallow Seas We Sail by Emery.

Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”
My personal Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I owe my entire life – my WHOLE life, everything I am and everything I have – to Him. He saved my life.

Who’s that girl? RSC Edition!

Ever since the launch, RSC has received a ton of emails about our summer lookbook. We’re not going to lie – most of them were notes just plain asking, “OMG who’s that really hot chick?” Well, the big reveal – that really hot chick is our friend Bridget.

Sure she’s cute, but trust us when we say she’s also a complete dork ; )

One of my and Reg’s favorite high school memories was when we booked a mega-classic bill that saw Regan’s band play alongside some incredible acts – The Action Taken (members went on to form new millennium hardcore legends Have Heart), Smackin’ Isaiah (now Warped Tour favorites A Wilhelm Scream) and Jericho (now RVA/Fat Wreck Chords darlings Smoke or Fire).

A picture of us along with Bridget collecting cash at the door of said show made its way into our high school year book and to this day we find it hilarious. And here we are again…10 years later…

While Bridget looks the same, I think you’ll notice I stopped spiking my hair and wearing sick ball chain necklaces. Regan also ate a sandwich or two and no longer weighs 90 lbs. Sometimes we just have to own these things.

RSC Industry Intelligence: Zac Wolf of Zac Wolf Photography

The apparel industry is one of many moving parts. For every high-profile designer there are thousands of photographers, marketing professionals and independent designers who quietly do their part to keep our community vibrant and relevant.  These individuals deserve their recognition. In an effort to ensure that, RSC’s Industry Intelligence make sure you hear from these unsung heroes who keep it real each and every day.

Name, rank and why we should care?
Zac Wolf — CEO, CFO, CTO and creative director at Zac Wolf Photography.  I am one-man operation except for some great people who help me out here and there.

What are you working on right now?
I am knee-deep in wedding season as well as revamping my website and blog.  Big changes and big moves now that I’m a college grad and all.  I’m trying to find new and cool ways to keep in touch with my current clients and find new clients.  Overall, I am trying to find a niche of people that are looking for a photographer who likes shitty jokes, hates traditional advertising and has a unique take on things.

What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
Currently, I am working on a series focused on comedians and comic personalities. I have been posting previews of that on my Tumblr so some people may have seen a bit already.  Be on the lookout for an updated website and blog. Other future plans include a new business venture that I have plans to announce soon — something fun, exciting and nerve-wracking all at once.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
It’s hard to nail down one influence, I mean, I’m a wedding photographer who got started taking pictures at hardcore shows.  I cannot really nail down one influence which I feel is for the best.  I try to take in everything around me and turn it into something unique.

What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
The first thing that comes to mind is when I got all my gear stolen before a wedding — the lesson is don’t leave your gear in a car and always have insurance. (I was still able to shoot the wedding.)

Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?
Book: 1602 by Neil Gaiman

Movie in a theater: Midnight In Paris

Movie at home: Gremlins 2

Record: Ty Segall – “Melted”

Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”
My sister.  She is like a parent, sibling and best friend wrapped in one — all while being an amazing mother to my niece, Rylan.  She’s such a great person and her faith in me means everything.  I’m kind of a lovey dovey guy and I guess that’s why I was attracted to weddings, but I really do love doing other stuff  and getting the chance to flex other creative muscles.
