Interview with The Freshstock

Regan Smith Clarke Interview with The Freshstock

I recently jumped onto the hot seat with The Freshstock to discuss my brand, life in Boston, juggalos, Chris Daughtry and peanut butter sandwiches. Read the interview.. err random conversation to find out what’s going on in my head:

Industry Intelligence: Make Believe Clothing Co. for Regan Smith Clarke

Make Believe Clothing Co. for Regan Smith Clarke

The clothing industry is one of many moving parts. For every high profile designer, there are thousands of photographers, marketing professionals and independent designers who quietly do their part to keep our community vibrant and relevant. These individuals deserve their recognition.

In an effort to make sure that happens, each month you will be hearing from these unsung heroes who keep it real each and every day.

Our December Industry Intelligence report spotlights designer/clothing brand owner, Brandon Herbel of Make Believe Clothing Co. Brandon was kind enough to keep us in the loop on what he has brewing:

Name, rank and why we should care?
My name is Brandon Herbel and I am the owner / designer of Make Believe in Omaha, Nebraska. I also run a small clothing company with my friend David Blaise also under the name Make Believe.

What are you working on right now? What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
I just finished up 10 shirts for Upper Playground. It’s the first time I’ve been hired out to work on this many t-shirts at one time. It was a great experience working with Matt and the UP gang. Other then that I’ve been focusing on personal stuff and the release of the new winter line for Make Believe Clothing Co.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
Andy Warhol is probably my biggest influence. A lot of his work was very simple and minimal but had a huge impact and meaning behind it. The 60’s pop art and design culture really interests me.

What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
I would have to say learning to be patient. I think that could be a general answer for life as well but definitely in my work. Whether its not trying to rush a design just to have it finished but realize that the creative process is important. Also, to know that good things come to those who wait. Don’t rush on putting out a clothing line or getting your portfolio online. Make sure you’ve got something you’re proud of.

Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?
Last book I read was David Sedaris’s book “When You Are Engulfed In Flames”
Last movie I watched was “The Big Lebowski” last night with my friends Billy and Eric. Such a bad ass movie!
Last record I listened to in its entirety was the new Wavves album “King of the Beach”. Easily the best album that came out this past summer.

Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my Mom. She’s always been there for me and so supportive of every I’ve done. That includes dropping out of college to pursue my career as a artist / designer and covering both arms completely in tattoos. Love you mom!

Last words?
Thanks for having me be a part of this Regan. Keep up the great work man!

Industry Intelligence: Cavata Clothing Co. for Regan Smith Clarke

This month’s spotlight lands on another local self-starter and clothing brand owner, Lori Kirk of Cavata Clothing Co. Lori gives me a run down of what she has cookin’ in the world of CAVATA:

Name, rank and why we should care?
Lori Kirk, founder and co-owner of CAVATA

What are you working on right now? What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
We are currently working on a zip-up outterwear piece that will include lots of custom special touches like hand sewn hem tags and a logo-inspired pull for the zipper.  You may also see a few accessories hit the store this winter.  And as always, we continue to feature talented artists, musicians and performers via our arts & entertainment blog

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
CAVATA is a music and art-inspired apparel brand and everything we release, write about or promote is influenced by the arts.  We can get an idea for a design from a song, painting, a movie…creativity and expression are all around us, we just need to tap into it.

What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
The hardest lesson I’ve had to learn is that everyone makes mistakes starting out.  The difference between those who succeed and those who give up is the ability to learn from those mistakes.  I wouldn’t change anything that I’ve done with this company because even my poor decisions taught me valuable lessons you have to experience firsthand.

Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?
The last movie I watched was a documentary about Graffiti culture called “Bomb It.”  I listen to a million songs a day but the last song that was just on Pandora was Flyleaf’s “Chasm.”

Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”
My friends and family.  This may sound cliche but having a strong foundation of friends and family has helped me bring CAVATA to a point I never knew was possible.

Last words?
Never give up.  You will make mistakes & things won’t always go your way but if your heart is into what you’re doing you can do no wrong.  To get something you’ve never had to have to do something you’ve never done.
