RSC Industry Intelligence: Josh Schmitz of Ruckus Apparel

Name, rank and why we should care?
Josh Schmitz – Owner / Founder / and MFCEO of RUCKUS.

What are you working on right now?
We released our fall collection on September 2nd and that’s been keeping us really busy. We’re currently working on a ton of team orders getting ready for the winter sports season. Custom team gear is one of my most favorite things we do.

What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
We’re collaborating right now with the Denver Outlaws (Colorado’s professional lacrosse team). We’re also planning and pulling fabrics and cuts for our winter collection. We’re  doing some really cool cut and sew stuff including scarves, cardigans and a freaking sweet old school wool button-up sweater. I’m really stoked on how it’s all turning out.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
What influences our brand most is probably an odd combination of Naughty By Nature, Jonah Lomu, early-90s Miami Hurricane football, Abercrombie & Fitch and bare-knuckle boxing.

What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
This is really tough and I could give you some topical business bullshit like “do your taxes,” but I pride myself on being an honest and authentic guy so let’s get deep.

I went through a divorce last year and the toughest lesson I had to learn was that you can’t always be perfect. That sometimes, even when you try your best and all your intentions are right, sometimes things just don’t go according to plan. I’ve come to the conclusion that joy doesn’t ever really lead to or change shit. It’s the character arc in the story that is the real climax – the conflict. The conflict is what changes you and you can either get bitter or you can get better. And that’s a hard lesson to learn bro…a really hard one.

Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?
Book: A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. I HIGHLY recommend both this book along with Blue Like Jazz to young and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Movie: Bridesmaids. If you haven’t seen it yet, DOOOOO IT! It’s like the Hangover but for chicks, hahaha. And of course, 300, Lost Boys, and Running Scared are always on repeat at my place, too.

Record: That’s a tough one. White Pony by the Deftones has always been one of my favorites as well as In Shallow Seas We Sail by Emery.

Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”
My personal Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I owe my entire life – my WHOLE life, everything I am and everything I have – to Him. He saved my life.
