The clothing industry is one of many moving parts. For every high profile designer, there are thousands of photographers, marketing professionals and independent designers who quietly do their part to keep our community vibrant and relevant. These individuals deserve their recognition.
In an effort to make sure that happens, each month you will be hearing from these unsung heroes who keep it real each and every day.
Our December Industry Intelligence report spotlights designer/clothing brand owner, Brandon Herbel of Make Believe Clothing Co. Brandon was kind enough to keep us in the loop on what he has brewing:
Name, rank and why we should care?
My name is Brandon Herbel and I am the owner / designer of Make Believe in Omaha, Nebraska. I also run a small clothing company with my friend David Blaise also under the name Make Believe.
What are you working on right now? What future plans are in the works? Plug your shit!
I just finished up 10 shirts for Upper Playground. It’s the first time I’ve been hired out to work on this many t-shirts at one time. It was a great experience working with Matt and the UP gang. Other then that I’ve been focusing on personal stuff and the release of the new winter line for Make Believe Clothing Co.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your work?
Andy Warhol is probably my biggest influence. A lot of his work was very simple and minimal but had a huge impact and meaning behind it. The 60’s pop art and design culture really interests me.
What is the hardest lesson you have ever had to learn?
I would have to say learning to be patient. I think that could be a general answer for life as well but definitely in my work. Whether its not trying to rush a design just to have it finished but realize that the creative process is important. Also, to know that good things come to those who wait. Don’t rush on putting out a clothing line or getting your portfolio online. Make sure you’ve got something you’re proud of.
Last book read, movie watched, record listened to?
Last book I read was David Sedaris’s book “When You Are Engulfed In Flames”
Last movie I watched was “The Big Lebowski” last night with my friends Billy and Eric. Such a bad ass movie!
Last record I listened to in its entirety was the new Wavves album “King of the Beach”. Easily the best album that came out this past summer.
Fill in the blank: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without _____”
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my Mom. She’s always been there for me and so supportive of every I’ve done. That includes dropping out of college to pursue my career as a artist / designer and covering both arms completely in tattoos. Love you mom!
Thanks for having me be a part of this Regan. Keep up the great work man!
